Legislation that would ban new dams in national parks and would specifically restrict the expansion of reservoirs on federal land in Yosemite National Park without congressional approval was adopted by a House Interior subcommittee on national parks and sent to the full committee. If passed, the bill by Rep. Richard H. Lehman (D-Sanger) would hamper any effort San Francisco may make to raise the height of O’Shaughnessy Dam in Yosemite National Park. Although San Francisco has denied any immediate plans to raise the dam, Mayor Dianne Feinstein has told the subcommittee that her city opposes the bill because it singles out the Hetch Hetchy Water and Power System.
