Alcala Catches Bauer in Final Sprint, Wins Bicycle Circuit Race in Colorado
Raul Alcala, the only Mexican ever to race in the Tour de France, attacked the lead pack in the final sprint Saturday to win the Aspen circuit race of the Coors International bicycle race.
Alcala said he saw leader Steve Bauer constantly looking behind him during the last lap.
“I knew (Bauer) was nervous so I went for it,” said Alcala, who finished the 60-mile, 30-lap race in 2 hours 14 minutes 29 seconds. Bauer was second, Davis Phinney third.
Bauer, Adrie Van Der Poel of Holland, Joe Pelier of France and Dmitri Konyshev of the Soviet Union traded the lead throughout the race.
Konyshev picked up most of the $100 prizes for finishing a particular lap first.
Alcala, 22, lives in Boulder, Colo., but formerly lived in Monterrey, Mexico. This is his third Coors race, and in 1984 he was voted its most aggressive rider.
In the women’s road race between Aspen and the Maroon Bells wilderness area, Jeannie Longo won with a time of 1 hour 30 minutes 58 seconds.
