Red Sox Get Spike Owen From Mariners

The Seattle Mariners traded shortstop Spike Owen and outfielder Dave Henderson to the Boston Red Sox Sunday for shortstop Ray Quinones, right-handed pitchers Mike Brown and Mike Trujillo and a player to be named later.

“I had no idea about anything going on,” said Owen, who is batting .246 and has driven in 35 runs in 112 games. “I know Boston’s been wanting a shortstop but it was kind of a shock.

“I don’t have mixed emotions. I’m going to a first-place club,” Owen said. “It’s a dream to be in the pennant race and to have the chance to be in a World Series.”

Henderson was batting .276 with 14 home runs and 44 RBIs. He lost his job to rookie Danny Tartabull when Dick Williams replaced Chuck Cottier as manager.

Quinones was hitting .237 with 2 homers and 15 RBIs in 62 games for Boston. Brown was 4-4 with a 5.34 ERA. In three games, Trujillo had no decisions and a 9.53 ERA over 5 innings.
