L.A. Officer Dies of Bee Sting After Visit to His Dying Mother

SEATTLE — A Los Angeles policeman died shortly after visiting his dying mother, apparently from a bee sting suffered while driving away from a nursing home with his father, authorities said today.
Sgt. Gerald Mowat, 47, collapsed Sunday after a bee stung him on the arm as he rested it on the open car window, a spokesman at the King County Medical Examiner’s office said.
“After a couple of minutes, he felt woozy and asked his father to take the wheel,” the spokesman said. “He must have been allergic to the sting.”
Mowat collapsed in the car as the father drove to a shopping center to call an ambulance. After calling, however, he decided to drive his son directly to nearby University Hospital where Mowat was pronounced dead in the emergency room.
