Long Beach : Yacht Club Expansion OKd
The City Council, over the objections of the city Tidelands Agency, has approved an expansion requested by the Long Beach Yacht Club.
The council Tuesday voted 7-1 to approve an increase in the size of the restaurant, lounge and bar facilities from 19,579 to 21,009 square feet.
The expansion drew the objections of Carolyn S. Sutter, Tidelands Agency general manager. In a letter to the council, Sutter said the expansion “does not appear to accomplish or promote the primary purpose of the lease,” which is to increase the popularity of boating. Also, increasing the size of the bar would “presumably increase alcohol consumption and presumably increase noise,” Sutter wrote.
Councilman Tom Clark, who voted for the increase, said the club is “heavily subsidized by the city” and should provide more services to the community. Councilwoman Jan Hall, however, said a lease with the club has already been negotiated and cannot be altered, while Councilman Edd Tuttle praised the services provided by the club.
The club has a 50-year lease with the city signed in 1970 that calls for paying the city $476 a month, or $5,722 this year.
