Spraying for the Oriental fruit fly will be expanded today to include areas of Del Cerro, Allied Gardens, Grantville and Lake Murray, county agricultural officials said.

Trees and utility poles in a 12-square-mile sector of East San Diego, La Mesa and Lemon Grove were sprayed Monday after a second Oriental fruit fly was trapped in the area Aug. 13.

The additional six square miles were added after a third mature male fruit fly was found Monday in a trap on a lemon tree half a mile north of the original treatment boundary, Agricultural Commissioner Kathleen Thuner said.

Three adult male flies have been found within two weeks, leading officials to believe they are from the same generation. Fruit off the trees where the flies were found have shown no larvae, Thuner said.

Spraying of the bait treatment laced with pesticide will take place every two weeks for the next three months, Thuner said.
