A storm dumped up to half an inch of rain over fire-blackened regions of the West, aiding firefighters’ efforts to snuff the last hotspots from blazes that charred almost 738,000 acres in nine states. “We got rain on all of the fires from northeast Oregon to central Idaho,” said Dave Damron of the Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Ida. Firefighters had been expecting more lightning, but rain cooled flames instead of generating lightning to spark new fires.
