Santa Ana : Fire Damages Part of Old Railroad Station

Share

A fire burned the south end of the old Santa Ana railroad station late Thursday night, damaging not only the building but also loading platforms and two freight cars of lumber that were sitting nearby.

Fire officials believe homeless people may have started the blaze accidentally, Battalion Chief Jim Dalton said. “We found evidence that transients were sleeping under the station. We found beds and cooking utensils . . . but there are no witnesses or leads at this time.”

No injuries were reported, Dalton said, but damage in and around the depot was estimated at $72,000.

About 30 firefighters battled the blaze in the old station at 1034 East 4th St., now used mostly for storage. The fire was controlled in about half an hour, Dalton said, but firefighters still worked at the depot late Friday morning.
