‘Capt. Midnight’ Fined $5,000

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A video pirate using the nickname “Capt. Midnight,” who briefly jammed a satellite TV signal to broadcast a protest of cable television signal scrambling, was fined $5,000 and given a year’s probation today.
John R. MacDougall interrupted Home Box Office’s signal to complain against HBO’s decision to scramble its satellite signal so dish owners could not receive it without paying a monthly fee.
