A 41-year-old Escondido man was hit and killed by a pickup truck while trying to walk across Interstate 15 about 1 mile south of Deer Springs Road early Wednesday morning, officials said.

Eric J. Saville was trying to cross from the east side of the freeway when he ran directly into the path of a northbound vehicle, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said. Deputy Coroner Dan Matticks said Saville lived at the Rancho Verona Country Retirement Home less than a mile from the accident.

Saville apparently had complained of stomach pains to a night attendant shortly before 4 a.m. but when the attendant went to get medication, Saville slipped out, Matticks said.

Saville was taken to Palomar Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver will not be charged, the CHP spokesman said.
