Eleven Westminster youths were injured, one seriously, when the station wagon they were riding in swerved on a winding road early Tuesday and rolled over several times, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

CHP Officer Kerry Kramer said the accident occurred about 2 a.m. north of Modjeska off Santiago Canyon Road, just east of Jackson Road.

The driver, Marc Yancey, 17, was seriously injured. He was flown to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he was listed in stable condition with a broken shoulder and numerous cuts, Kramer said.

Most of the other youths, ranging in age from 12 to 17, suffered cuts and bruises, he said.

Four were taken to Mission Community Hospital in Mission Viejo and four to Saddleback Community Hospital in Laguna Hills, where they were treated and released.

The two others were treated at the scene, said county Fire Department spokeswoman Patti Range.

The youths told CHP investigators that they were out joy riding in a 1978 Ford station wagon that belonged to one of the youth’s parents when an animal darted across Santiago Canyon Road, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

Kramer said an investigation is continuing.
