Duke was always ready for adventure, so when he wandered away from home two years ago his family thought he was just out on the town. As the weeks and months passed, however, they despaired of his return.

Several days ago, the German shepherd came knocking.

“We thought he was lost forever,” 15-year-old Gil Rash said Thursday. “Dogs just don’t come home after such a long time.”

Rash grew up with the 8-year-old canine. “We live on 10th floor, so Duke used to open the door and go downstairs. But he always came back in the morning,” he said.

“Last Friday we heard a noise outside. We opened the door and there he was, wagging his tail. He had a skin disease, his ears were drooping, but otherwise he was just the same old Duke,” Rash said.
