RUN-D.M.C. PERMIT POSTPONED IN R.I.

Rap group Run-D.M.C., whose concert this week in Providence was canceled by the city because of concerns over possible violence, has been granted permission to play Providence--next year. The city Board of Licenses approved a license for the group, but the permit won’t be good until next spring.

The cancellation was prompted by violence at other Run-D.M.C. concerts, particularly Aug. 17 in Long Beach, where 40 people were injured in a street-gang brawl. Officials of the Los Angeles Street Scene Festival have invited the group to perform at the Sept. 20-21 event as part of an anti-drug campaign.

Run-D.M.C. filed suit in Providence Superior Court this week, seeking $3 million in damages from the city for banning the group. The future of the lawsuit is unclear in light of the board’s latest action.
