Extension Given to Home for Elderly on Fire-Safety Efforts

A Gardena residential care home for the elderly has been given an extension until Tuesday to meet fire-safety standards or face a shutdown by state officials.

The Department of Social Services had previously threatened to close Waldorf Manor on Friday but has given the facility extra time to relocate about 15 residents who have trouble walking, according to state officials.

On Wednesday, the department shut down the Hilton Retirement Center in Lynwood. Both the Lynwood and Gardena care homes are owned by Los Angeles businessman Sam Menlo. John W. Hagerty, the department’s deputy director for community care licensing, said Hilton might be allowed to reopen the Lynwood home if fire safety and other standards are met.
