Los Angeles County’s AIDS counseling and testing project has been awarded a $375,000 federal grant, but the amount is less than half the amount requested, officials said. The grant came from the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta and will go toward setting up additional test sites in the county, Mario Sewell, an administrator to the county’s AIDS program office said. Currently, there are three centers that test for acquired immune deficiency syndrome antibodies in the county. Only one testing center is operated by the county under a contract with the Gay & Lesbian Community Services Center in West Hollywood. The other two are operated in the City of Long Beach. The county had sought $870,906 to set up test centers in the San Fernando Valley, East Los Angeles and South-Central Los Angeles.
