Mercado Stops Montes in Eight at Olympic

Bernado Mercado of Columbia, behind on points, stopped Fernando Montes of Mexico at the end of the eighth round in their scheduled 10-round heavyweight bout Thursday night at the Olympic Auditorium.

Mercado, in his first fight in three years, fell behind in the early rounds before mounting a sixth-round attack that culminated in a one-sided eighth round when he shut Montes’ right eye.
