Draw Opens 2nd Half of Chess Match

The second half of the world championship chess match between champion Gary Kasparov and challenger Anatoly Karpov began Friday in Leningrad. The 13th game in the series, which could last as long as 24 games, was drawn. Kasparov leads, 7-6.

The first 12 games of the match were played in London, finishing on Aug. 27. The remainder will be played in Leningrad. Six wins or 12 1/2 points are needed for victory. Kasparov leads in wins, 2-1, and will retain his title if the match ends in a 12-12 tie.

Friday’s game was a Neo-Gruenfeld Defense, a quiet, symmetrical opening which the players had tested in the third game of the match. This time, Karpov tried 10 f4 instead of 10 Nf3, but failed to gain any advantage. Later, Kasparov tried to liven up the game with Kingside play. However, even after he won a pawn at move 34, he obtained no winning chances.

The 14th game, with Kasparov playing White, is scheduled for Monday.
