Golf Roundup : Mize Helps Fehr Gain Share of Lead
Rick Fehr, playing between cloudbursts that halted play, shot a five-under-par 66 Friday to share the second-round lead with Larry Mize in the $400,000 B.C. Open at Endicott, N.Y.
Play was suspended for two hours during a morning thunderstorm, and another downpour further drenched the En-Joie Golf Club in late afternoon, although it wasn’t severe enough to halt play.
Fehr appeared to be relegated to second place until Mize, the first-round leader at 64, made a double-bogey 6 on the final hole for a 67 and dropped back into a tie for the lead at 131.
Bobby Wadkins was in third place at 134 after shooting a 68.
Don January overcame a hole-in-one by Al Balding to defeat the Canadian in match play, 6 and 4, and help the United States senior team take a 28-12 lead over the International team in the $600,000 Chrysler Cup at Potomac, Md.
Balding’s ace occurred on the 187-yard third hole at the Tournament Players Club at Avenel, the same hole that Arnold Palmer aced on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. Balding, using a 5-iron, bounced his tee shot about 20 feet from the pin, and the ball rolled into the cup.
The U.S. team, which also got a victory from Palmer, won six of eight matches.
New Zealand native M.J. Smith sank a 151-yard eagle shot en route to a six-under-par 66 and the first-round lead in the $200,000 Cellular-One Ping tournament at Portland, Ore.
Smith used a 6-iron for her second shot on the par-4, 370-yard 15th hole. It was the key to her six-under-par 30 on the back nine.
U.S. Open Champion Jane Geddes, Robin Walton and Laurie Peterson shared second place with 68s. Defending champion Nancy Lopez had a double bogey on the par-3 16th hole and was at 70.
