As sheriff’s deputies listened on the other end of the telephone line, a worried Lynwood woman who had called authorities when she heard someone prowling in her driveway was shot to death as she stood talking on the phone. Sheriff’s Deputy Merlyn Poppleton said deputies heard the shots and hurried to the address and found Diane Cook, 40, dead. Her common-law husband, James Wendle Fields, 56, who was still at the home, was arrested and booked on suspicion of murder, Poppleton said. He was being held without bail.
