Ivan Lendl, who last week won the U.S. Open, withdrew Friday from the $315,000 Volvo Tennis/Los Angeles tournament.

According to his manager, Lendl is suffering from tendinitis in both knees and hips.

“Ivan regrets the fact that he will be unable to compete in his first Volvo Tennis/Los Angeles event,” Jerry Solomon, Lendl’s manager, said. “Due to his chronic tendinitis, doctors made the determination at the last minute that he was unfit to compete in this week’s event.”

Lendl has suffered from tendinitis in his knees all year. According to Solomon, the problem has moved to Lendl’s hips. Lendl withdrew from a special event in Australia last week, complaining of pain.

Solomon said Lendl would be out five weeks.

Lendl, the No. 1-ranked player in the world, would have been the top-seeded player in the Los Angeles tournament, which runs Monday through Sept. 21 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center at UCLA.
