Golf Roundup : Strange and O’Meara Move Into a Tie for Lead

Curtis Strange, working on his third million dollars on the PGA Tour, and Mark O’Meara, a new golf millionaire, charged as others faded Friday to share the lead after two rounds of the $450,000 Bank of Boston golf tournament at Sutton, Mass.

Strange shot a six-under-par 65, and O’Meara shot a 67 for 36-hole scores of 138 on the 7,110-yard Pleasant Valley Country Club course.

Strange and O’Meara, who played most of the second round in sunshine after a light mist in the early afternoon, were one stroke ahead of Australian Wayne Grady, Curt Byrum, Mark Calcavecchia and Wayne Levi.

Deadlocked another stroke back were Brian Claar, Bobby Wadkins, Bobby Clampett, D.A. Weibring, Bill Glasson, Robert Lohr, Antonio Cerda and Blaine McCallister.

The cut for the final 36 holes was made at 145. Ray Floyd, the 1977 Pleasant Valley winner and the reigning U.S. Open champion, just made it, shooting a 69 for a 145 total.

Among those missing the cut were Lee Trevino, Bob Gilder and Hubert Green.

Jan Stephenson holed a 5-iron second shot on the par-4 second hole for an eagle to highlight a round of five-under-par 67 that gave her the lead in the second round of the $200,000 Safeco LPGA tournament at Kent, Wash.

Stephenson’s 136 total moved her two strokes ahead of Beth Daniel, who shot a 68. Robin Walton had a 65 and was tied for third place with first-round leader Kris Monaghan (72) at 139.

Betsy King shot a 71 for a 140 total.

New Zealand left-hander Bob Charles birdied his last two holes for a five-under-par 67 and a one-shot lead in the first round of the $300,000 United Virginia Bank-PGA Senior tournament at Richmond, Va.

“I guess I made everything you’d want to make,” the 50-year-old former British Open champion said of his bogey-free 34-33 round over the 7,644-yard Hermitage Country Club course.

A stroke behind was Billy Casper. Eight players--including defending champion Peter Thomson, leading money-winner Chi Chi Rodriguez, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player--were tied at 69.

Australia’s Peter Fowler and Scotland’s Bernard Gallacher each shot a two-under-par 68 and shared the lead at 133 after two rounds of the $210,000 European Open at Sunningdale, England.

Spain’s Jose Rivero (66), Scotland’s Ken Brown (67), Australia’s Greg Norman (67) and England’s Nick Faldo (72) were tied for second, one stroke behind.

Australian Graham Marsh shot a three-under-par 69 and gained a share of the lead at 136 with Japan’s Toru Nakamura (68) at the halfway point of the $387,000 Suntory Open at Inzai, Japan.

Jack Nicklaus shot a 74 and was at 145.
