What a shame that in last week’s features on bookstores in San Diego (“Great Bookstores Scarce as Chains Squeeze Markets,” Sept. 3) you overlooked John Cole’s Book Store in La Jolla. How could you miss the best, the most unique, the most completely stocked and the most famous bookstore in the county?

John Cole’s actually stocks good current writing other than best sellers, a backlog of modern classics, and will take a chance on great books that may move slowly. It offers customized service in tracking down any book still published, and it mails books to customers who can’t come in--and Barbara Cole even knows what her customers want.

The store itself is an adventure. There is no other like it. Try it!
