James Jackson accounted for 247 yards and 1 touchdown and engineered four second-half scoring drives at Athens, Ga., Saturday to spark 19th-ranked Georgia to a 31-7 victory over Duke.

“I think this is the best game I’ve ever played,” said Jackson, in his second season as Georgia’s starting quarterback.

“I know this offense can be a lot better than it was. Just imagine how many points we could have scored if we hadn’t fumbled so much.”

The Bulldogs (1-0) lost four of five fumbles and never had to punt.

“We kept Duke off balance with a lot of rollouts and sprint outs,” said Jackson, who completed 16 of 22 passes for 193 yards and rushed for 54 yards.

“They didn’t know if we were going to pass or run.”

Jackson hit Troy Sadowski with an eight-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter as Duke (1-1) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end.

.

“We tried a lot of different things, we just couldn’t slow them down,” Duke Coach Steve Sloan said. “We played hard, we tried hard, we hit them hard, ran ‘em down. But we just couldn’t stop them.”

Rutgers 16, Kentucky 16--Joe Worley kicked a 32-yard field goal with 1 second remaining to give the Wildcats a tie with the Scarlet Knights in a nonconference game at Lexington, Ky.

Rutgers had gone ahead, 16-13, on Doug Giesler’s third field goal of the game, a 37-yarder with 2:18 to go. Kentucky then moved the ball 67 yards in 12 plays to set up Worley’s game-tying effort.

It was Kentucky’s first game of the season, while Rutgers opened last week with an 11-9 victory over Boston College.

About six minutes later, Henning, the son of Atlanta Falcon Coach Dan Henning, threw 21 yards to Azizuddin Abdur-Ra’oof to make it 35-13.
