Giants’ Brenly Makes Four Errors in Inning, Then Makes Up for Them

Bob Brenly atoned for a major league record-tying four errors in an inning by hitting two home runs, including a solo shot with two outs in the ninth Sunday that gave the San Francisco Giants a 7-6 victory over the Atlanta Braves.

Brenly hit a 2-0 pitch from Paul Assenmacher (6-3) far over the left-field fence for his 14th home run of the season. Brenly and Bob Melvin hit consecutive solo homers in the fifth, and Brenly also had a two-run single in the seventh.

Scott Garrelts (13-9) pitched two scoreless innings for the victory.

Brenly, a veteran catcher, made his four errors at third base in the fourth inning. He became the first player to make four errors in an inning since Lenny Merullo of the Chicago Cubs on Sept. 13, 1942, and also tied the major league record for most errors by a third baseman in game. The misplays led to the four unearned runs.

Brenly bobbled Bob Horner’s grounder leading off the fourth. After the Braves loaded the bases with one out, Glenn Hubbard grounded to Brenly, who juggled the ball for one error and then threw wildly to the plate for another error. Atlanta pitcher Charlie Puleo hit a two-run single before Brenly misplayed another grounder by Dale Murphy.
