Boxing Roundup : Breland, Biggs Remain Unbeaten

Olympic champions Mark Breland and Tyrell Biggs continued unbeaten as professionals Sunday night when Breland knocked out Reggie Miller in the second round, and Biggs pounded out a unanimous decision over Percell Davis.

Breland knocked Miller down twice before referee Joe Cortez stopped the bout at 1:40 of the second round. Breland, of Brooklyn, N.Y., improved to 14-0 with 10 knockouts. Miller fell to 18-6.

Breland, 147, put Miller down seconds into the fight with a jab followed by a right to the head. Miller, 147 1/2, dropped to his knees but jumped right up.

The same combination buckled Miller’s knees midway through the second round. Miller fell to the ropes and Breland moved in with eight unanswered punches. A right to the head stiffened Miller in the middle of the ring and a left dropped him on his back, prompting Cortez to stop it.

“I knew he was going to come at me,” Breland said. “When I knocked him down, I tried to stay on top of him.”

Heavyweight Biggs, 11-0, dominated his 10-round bout against Davis. Biggs, 220, peppered Davis, 253 3/4, throughout with jolting head blows.

Davis never went down although he ran out of gas around the fifth round. All three judges scored the fight 10-0 for Biggs. Davis, of Detroit, fell to 13-5.

Biggs, of Philadelphia, did most of his damage with hooks to the head, and kept a constant jab in Davis’ face.

“He took some pretty good shots,” Biggs said. “I didn’t want to burn myself out going for the knockout. I just kept a constant pace.”

Biggs’ co-managers, Lou Duva and Shelly Finkel, are trying to match Biggs with former champion Larry Holmes.

“We’re close to signing with Larry Holmes,” Duva said. “Then we’ll find out how good Tyrell is.”
