Pacific 10 Continues to Be Underestimated

Share

Last Saturday, three Pac-10 teams clobbered the Big Ten, with Washington burying Ohio State. Yet, all season long, the best of the Big Ten will be ranked ahead of the Pac-10 in both polls. That has been the script for the past 20 years, so why rewrite it?

In December, the media people and coaches who vote in the polls will start weaseling. Smog, distractions and home-field advantage account for the Big Ten’s humiliation in the Rose Bowl, they will say. Naively, one television announcer said it all last New Year’s Day: “Gee, maybe we have underestimated the Pac-10 all these years.”
