PREP FOOTBALL : Sailers Win on Ocean View Turnovers

Share

Ed Milum was in the right place at the right time Friday night, intercepting two passes and returning a fumble for a touchdown as Newport Harbor shut out visiting Ocean View, 20-0, before a crowd of 2,000 at Davidson Field.

Milum’s 10-yard return of a third-quarter fumble forced by Joe Hanen broke open what had been a close game and sent the Sailors on to their first victory of the season. Ocean View fell to 1-1.

“We made them throw the ball where they didn’t want to,” said Milum, the Sailors’ free safety who had interceptions in the first and fourth periods. “We needed to come back after last week (a 29-6 loss to Santa Ana).”

Junior quarterback Kirk Summers completed 15 of 24 passes for 171 yards, including an 18-yard scoring pass to Mark Craig. Craig finished with 8 receptions for 99 yards, all in the first half. Sterling Coberly hit on two of four field goal attempts for the Sailors.

Ocean View played Newport Harbor on even terms in the first half but hurt its cause with turnovers. In addition to the two interceptions, the Seahawks lost three fumbles.
