UCLA won approval from the University of California Regents to boost the fund-raising goal for its UCLA Campaign to $300 million, making the campaign the largest of any UC campus and second only to Ohio State University among public universities in the United States. UCLA Chancellor Charles E. Young told the board that the 4-year-old campaign has been “extremely successful” and would exceed the university’s original goal of $200 million “by a substantial amount.” The regents, meeting in San Francisco, agreed to raise the goal and to extend the campaign, originally scheduled to end in June, 1987, through the end of 1988. The five-year fund-raising drive, launched to support campus academic programs, has raised more than $178 million so far, with the largest gift a $13-million donation of computers from IBM.
