Officials from Catalina Cruises Inc. and the Inland Boatmen’s Union made some progress in a five-hour meeting but failed to reach an agreement in the 40-day-old strike by crewmen of the major ferryboat service to Santa Catalina Island. Sam Sacco, a spokesman for Catalina Cruises, said the company softened its demand for a pay cut, lowering the amount sought from 15% to 10%. He said the union, which had been fighting any cuts, offered to accept a 5% cut. Sacco said the two sides will meet again late this week after company officials evaluate a revised benefits package submitted by the union.
