Golf Roundup : Pavin Beats Barr in a Playoff to Win Milwaukee Open

Corey Pavin sank a 10-foot birdie putt on the fourth extra hole Sunday to beat Canada’s Dave Barr in a playoff and win the $400,000 Greater Milwaukee Open.

Pavin, from Los Angeles, needed only to par the 390-yard No. 4 hole for the victory after Barr missed the green with his approach shot and bogeyed the hole.

Pavin, 26, tied Barr by shooting a 5-under-par 67 in the final round for a 16-under-par total of 272. It was Pavin’s fourth win on the PGA tour and his first in a playoff. He collected $72,000. Earlier this year, he won the Hawaiian Open.

Barr, the leader for three rounds, began the final round at 14-under-par and with a one-stroke lead over David Frost of South Africa. Frost shot a 70 to finish in third place at 273.

Bob Tway fell short in his bid to become the PGA Tour’s leading money winner. He needed at least a third-place finish to overtake Greg Norman of Australia, who has $653,296 in 1986 Tour earnings.

But Tway shot a 1-under-par 71 to finish at 11 under. He earned $8,400, raising his total to $638,516.

Patty Sheehan made a 15-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole of a four-way playoff to win the $275,000 women’s tournament at San Jose.

Sheehan earned first-place prize money of $41,250 and her third tournament victory of the year by defeating Ayako Okamoto, Amy Alcott and Betsy King after all four had finished 54 holes in 212.

Bruce Crampton parred the final hole Sunday to win the $200,000 World Senior Invitational tournament at Charlotte, N.C. Crampton finished at 9-under-par 279, one stroke ahead of Chi Chi Rodriguez and Lee Elder.

At Sutton Coldfield, England, Ian Woosnam of Wales won the $200,000 European Tournament Players Championship by shooting a 69 for a 277 total.
