The grand jury investigating the cocaine-induced death of Maryland basketball player Len Bias heard testimony in Upper Marlboro, Md., from doctors who submitted conflicting reports as to how Bias ingested the fatal dose of the drug.

The state’s chief medical examiner, Dr. John Smialek, whose office performed the autopsy on Bias, is believed to have testified in the closed hearing that the athlete snorted 400 to 500 milligrams of the drug shortly before his death in the early morning hours of June 19.

Smialek’s opinion disputed that of another report filed Sept. 12 by three Prince George’s General Hospital and medical staff members. Their findings indicated that Bias had swallowed three to five grams of cocaine, possibly in a drink.
