A Costa Mesa man convicted three times of drunk driving was arrested after his car collided with a van carrying four people, including the president of the Orange County Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Police said Dane Heftved, 26, was booked on suspicion of drunk driving after his car, traveling at 50 to 60 m.p.h., struck the rear of the van in Costa Mesa. MADD President Laurie McCarthy of Huntington Beach and the others--including Heftved and a passenger in his car--were treated for minor injuries. Police said records show Heftved served time for drunk driving convictions in 1981 and 1983. In 1983, he also was convicted of reckless driving. Heftved was released on his own recognizance, pending results of a blood alcohol test.
