George Bamberger, 61, Retires Again as Brewer Manager
George Bamberger Thursday announced his second retirement as manager of the Milwaukee Brewers and his third as a major league skipper. He had retired from the Brewer job in 1980 after heart surgery and quit as manager of the New York Mets in 1983.
Bamberger, 61, has been in baseball for 41 years. He brought the Brewers their first winning season in 1979, but the team was 71-81 after a victory Thursday night, in what was probably Bamberger’s last game, and is flirting with last place in the American League East. An interim manager is expected to be named today.
Bamberger was completing a two-year contract, but earlier this month he said General Manager Harry Dalton had indicated that the job was Bamberger’s next year if he wanted to return.
