Gerlach Advances in Surfing Event

Brad Gerlach of Leucadia defeated Michael Ho of Hawaii Friday to move into the round of 16 of the Stubbies Pro surfing championships at Oceanside Harbor.

Gerlach, the defending champion and the No. 4 seed this year, will meet second-seeded Tom Curren of Santa Barbara today with the winner reaching the quarterfinals. Curren defeated Sunny Garcia of Hawaii on Friday.

Top-seeded Mark Occhilupo of Australia also moved into the round of 16 by beating Luke Egan, also of Australia. Third-seeded Tom Carroll of Australia, the runner-up to Gerlach last year, defeated Scott Farnsworth of Huntington Beach. Carroll will face Gary Elkerton, also of Australia, today.

Others in today’s round of 16 include Gary Clisby of Huntington Beach, who beat Hans Hedeman of Hawaii, and Wayne Bartholomew of Australia, who beat Derek Ho of Hawaii.

In the women’s competition, top-seeded Freda Zamba of Flagler Beach, Fla. defeated Michele Donohue of Australia.
