Abebe Mekonnen led Ethiopian runners to a 1-2-3 finish at the Montreal International Marathon.
Mekonnen, 34, finished in 2 hours 10 minutes 30 seconds. Second was Tefera Guta, timed in 2:15:00, followed by Omar Moussa, 57 seconds behind. American Doug Kurtis finished fourth at 2:16:27.
Ellen Rochefort of Canada was first among the women in 2:35:50.
Meanwhile, Boguslaw Psujek of Poland won the West Berlin Marathon in 2:11:3. Henrik Jorgensen of Denmark finished second in 2:11:49, while Gabriel Kamau of Kenya was third in 2:12:35.
Charlotte Teske of West Germany won the women’s race in 2:32:10.
An unidentified 37-year-old West Berlin jogger died immediately after crossing the finish line.
