The Clippers apparently will open their training camp Friday without free-agent guard Darnell Valentine. There is an NBA rule against unsigned players reporting to camp, and Valentine said that he is not close to signing.

“I would relish the opportunity to be back in Los Angeles this season, but I don’t think we’re close to signing,” Valentine said from Lawrence, Kan., where he has spent the summer at the home of his business adviser. “We’re coming from two different angles.”
