Reid Nichols, who tied the game with a pinch-hit single in the ninth inning, gave the Chicago White Sox a 5-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday night with a 10th-inning bases-loaded single.

Jerry Hairston doubled to open the 10th inning and Carlton Fisk singled him to third off Pete Ladd, 8-6. After Lee Guetterman relieved and walked John Cangelosi, Edwin Nunez came on and surrendered the game-winning hit. Dave Schmidt, 3-6, was the winner.

Because of torrential downpours in the Chicago area the last several days and up until gametime, only 147 fans were in the stands when the doubleheader began.

Chicago led 3-1 but White Sox starter Steve Carlton walked leadoff batter Harold Reynolds in the top of the eighth. John Moses doubled Reynolds to third and Bobby Thigpen replaced Carlton.

After Phil Bradley struck out, Danny Tartabull tripled off the right-field wall to tie the score 3-3. Jim Presley’s sacrifice fly gave the Mariners a 4-3 edge.

The Mariners scored in the opening inning when Bradley tripled and came home as relay man Ozzie Guillen threw wildly toward third.

Ron Hassey’s leadoff homer in the second tied the score 1-1.The Sox loaded the bases on singles by Hairston and Fisk and Reynolds’ error on Tim Hulett’s attempted bunt. Third baseman Presley fielded the ball but Reynolds, who was covering first, failed to touch the bag after taking Presley’s throw.
