Share

After being rejected once by the Planning Commission, the City Council approved a development plan for a 25,000-square-foot retail center on Firestone Boulevard in which various structures will be razed, including the Norwalk Twin Theater.

The council, acting as the Redevelopment Agency, also approved an agreement with New Frontier Enterprises Inc., the developer, to subsidize the improvement of the 1.5 acres near San Antonio Drive.

The agency will purchase the land from John A. Menard Jr. for $900,000 and sell it to the developer for $800,000. The agency will also provide up to $130,000 for relocation assistance for existing tenants.

The theater was once the subject of protests in 1981 when it began showing X-rated films. The theater now shows family movies. Other businesses on the property include Monaco Motors and A-1 Motors.
