Top College Golf Teams Entered at North Ranch
BYU’s golf team, ranked No. 1 in the nation in a preseason poll by Florida Golf Weekly, is one of seven top men’s teams entered in the Southwestern Intercollegiate tournament, a two-day, 54-hole event at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake that begins Monday.
Oklahoma, rated No. 3, Arkansas (9), Arizona State (11), Oregon (13), Texas El Paso (14) and Fresno State (18) are the other teams rated in the top 20 that will compete in the 16-team field.
Next year, the tournament will expand to 24 teams to allow more exposure to the North Ranch course, which will play host to the NCAA championships in 1988, tournament chairman C.W. Johnson said.
Granada Hills Starter Sidelined by Ankle Sprain
X-rays taken Friday showed that Mike Davis’ left ankle is not broken, Granada Hills High football Coach Darryl Stroh said. Davis, a starting running back and linebacker, injured the ankle Thursday night in the Highlanders’ 35-3 win at Canoga Park.
“It is probably a severe sprain,” Stroh said. “Sometimes sprains keep a player sidelined as long as if there was a break. It will probably be a few weeks.”
Davis has gained 137 yards on 13 carries and helped the Highlanders to a 3-0 nonleague record. NOTABLE
