Coach Joe Paterno was generally pleased with unbeaten Penn State’s 31-6 victory over Rutgers at University Park, Pa., Saturday, but he did find something to complain about.

Paterno was concerned because the No. 5-ranked Nittany Lions (4-0) were assesed 9 penalties for 102 yards.

“We took foolish penalties, showed a lack of poise,” he said. “You can’t be aggressive and not have penalties, but some of ours were nonsense, just plain old-fashioned nonsense.”

Paterno went after tackle Tim Johnson on the sidelines for running onto the field to complain about a call. It cost Penn State 15 yards.

On the positive side, Paterno said the game was “by far our best effort of the season.”

Paterno was particularly pleased with linebacker Shane Conlan, who had six tackles and a sack. Paterno also praised running back D.J. Dozier, who gained 54 yards in 14 carries and scored the Nittany Lions’ first touchdown on a 12-yard run. “He is as good an all-around tailback as there is in the country,” Paterno said.

Penn State quarterback John Shaffer completed 13 of 20 passes for 154 yards and ran for 39 yards in 6 carries.

Rutgers is 3-1-1.

Syracuse 41, Missouri 9--Holder Mike Kmetz scored on a three-yard run off a fake field goal at Syracuse, N.Y., to spark a 21-point third quarter as the Orangemen broke a four-game losing streak.

Tailback Harold Gayden added touchdowns on runs of four yards and one yard for Syracuse (1-4).

Scott Schwedes became Syracuse’s all-time leader in touchdown receptions with an eight-yard catch in the first quarter. Schwedes has 13 career touchdowns, breaking the mark held by Mike Siano.
