College Roundup : UC Irvine Places 3rd at Stanford

Richard Graves and Rod Curry led the UC Irvine men’s cross-country team to a third-place finish in the 29-team Stanford Invitational at Palo Alto.

The Anteaters had 99 points to finish behind winner North Carolina State (85) and Stanford (88). Graves covered the 10,000-meter course in 31:31.2 to finish 11th, and Curry was right behind him at 31:31.5.

The UCI women’s team, with 159 points, finished sixth. Beth McGrann finished 12th and Jill Harrington 21st for UCI. McGrann finished the 5,000-meter course in 17:24.9, and Harrington ran 17:34.0.

Stanford (107) won the women’s race, followed by Brigham Young University (108), Arkansas (115), Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (118) and Clemson (141).

In other cross-country action:

Mike Jensen of Cal Tech ran the 5.3-mile course in 31:11 to lead the Beavers to 24 points and a quad-meet win over host Christ College of Irvine (56), Southern California College (68) and Pepperdine (81).

Andrea Friezen of Christ College of Irvine won the women’s race, covering 5,000 meters in 22:18, but that couldn’t prevent a last-place finish for Christ College. Pepperdine won the women’s division with 32 points, followed by Southern California College (43), Cal Tech (47) and Christ College (70).

In water polo action:

USC 5, UC Irvine 4--Robert Lynn scored with 2:55 remaining to break a 4-4 tie to lift No. 3-ranked USC to a nonconference victory over the No. 7-ranked Anteaters at USC. Mike Halphide scored two goals for Irvine (6-4), which plays at Pepperdine at 1 O’clock today. USC is 11-2.

In women’s soccer action:

UC Davis 1, UC Irvine 0--Heather Silverman’s first-half goal helped the Aggies win the final and deciding game of the five-team, round-robin All-Cal Tournament at UC Irvine. The victory improved UC Davis’ record in the two-day tournament to 2-0-2. UCI finished second at 2-1-1. UC San Diego was third, UCLA fourth and UC Santa Cruz fifth.

Kim Cusimano scored twice to lead the Anteaters (5-2-1) to a 3-0 victory over UC Santa Cruz in their first game Saturday. UC Davis had tied UC San Diego, 0-0, in its first game.

In men’s soccer action:

University of New Mexico 2, Cal State Fullerton 1--John Renken and Troy Bessera scored goals in the first half to lead the Lobos in the New Mexico Tournament at Albuquerque. Scott Pearson scored for Fullerton (2-6-2). The Titans play Air Force today.

In women’s volleyball action:

Cal State Long Beach 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--The 49ers defeated the Titans, 15-12, 15-4, 15-7, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. match at Fullerton. Wendy Knapp led the Titans (0-5, 6-13) with 11 kills. Long Beach is 1-5 and 5-6.

University of Hawaii 3, UC Irvine 0--Reydan Ahuna had 13 kills to lead the first-place Rainbows to a 15-8, 15-10, 15-10 victory in a PCAA match in Crawford Hall. Kris Roberts had 12 kills and 6 blocks to lead the Anteaters (1-4, 7-13). Hawaii is 4-0 and 9-1.

UC San Diego 3, Chapman 1--Lori Luhnow had 16 kills to lead the Tritons (23-3) past the Panthers, 11-15, 15-9, 15-8, 15-13, in the Hutton Sports Center. Tammy Light led Chapman (7-10) with 13 kills.

In community college women’s volleyball action:

Eastern Arizona 3, Orange Coast 1--The Pirates were eliminated from the San Diego Mesa Tournament by dropping a quarterfinal match, 15-6, 9-15, 15-12, 15-8, in San Diego. Orange Coast (3-2) finished fifth in the 15-team tournament.
