Fullerton Win Gives Sherbeck No. 200 : Williams’ Passing Helps the Hornets Defeat Bakersfield, 17-13

Fullerton College defeated Bakersfield, 17-13, Saturday night in Bakersfield’s Memorial Stadium to give Hornet Coach Hal Sherbeck his 200th career victory.

Sherbeck’s record in 26 years at the school is 200-55-6.

Fullerton (1-2) opened a 17-0 halftime lead behind the passing combination of quarterback Richard Williams and Roger Little, who teamed for a touchdown and set up a field goal with a long pass play, and the running of Andrew Greer.

Williams, who completed 14 of 27 attempts for 164 yards, completed a 53-yard pass to Little in the first period to put the Hornets in position for their first score, Todd Reynold’s 37-yard field goal.

Later in the first period, after a Renegade punt pinned the Hornets back at their one-yard line, Greer broke several tackles on his way to a 99-yard touchdown run to give Fullerton a 10-0 lead.

The Hornets’ final score came on a 14-yard pass play from Williams to Little with 1:17 left in the first half.

Bakersfield stopped the Hornets in the second half, limiting them to no first downs and minus 12 yards rushing. Fullerton committed 19 penalties for a loss of 182 yards.

In Mission Conference action:

Riverside 31, Rancho Santiago 28--Don kicker Darryl Willis’ 45-yard field goal attempt with 28 seconds remaining was wide left, as the Tigers held on for the win at Riverside’s Wheelock Field.

Michael Moore led the Riverside offense with 305 yards in 21 carries. He scored three touchdowns, on runs of 13, 89 and 73 yards.
