Shark Attacks Child Off West Florida Shore

SANIBEL, Fla. — A shark described as six to eight feet long attacked a 6-year-old girl swimming with her family in shallow waters in the Gulf of Mexico and ripped open her leg before a bystander rescued her.
The child, Luizhelma Florez of Pembroke Pines, was in serious condition in Lee Memorial Hospital Sunday after undergoing surgery Saturday, a representative of the hospital said.
