Yankees Expected to Name Woodward New General Manager
Woody Woodward will replace Clyde King as general manager of the New York Yankees, with the latter becoming a special assistant to owner George Steinbrenner, according to a published report.
The New York Times, quoting a source with the Yankees, reported in today’s editions that the change had been decided on in the last two weeks.
Neither Woodward, who served as a special assistant to Steinbrenner, nor Yankee media relations director Harvey Greene would comment on the report, the newspaper said. Its calls to King’s home in North Carolina went unanswered.
King was named general manager in April 1984, after serving nine years as a scout, a troubleshooter and an interim manager. The newspaper said the change apparently was prompted by King’s desire to spend more time at home.
