Jo Jo White, an outfielder who played nine seasons in the major leagues, seven with the Detroit Tigers in the 1930s, died Thursday in Tacoma, Wash., of complications following heart bypass surgery two weeks ago. He was 77.

White, who helped the Seattle Rainiers win Pacific Coast League titles in 1939-40-41, had his best big-league season in 1934 when he batted .313 with the Tigers. He was with Detroit from 1932 to 1938 and played in the 1934 and 1935 World Series. He played with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1943 and with the Cincinnati Reds in 1944.

In 1945, at 36, he won the PCL batting championship with a .355 average. White became the playing manager of the Rainiers in 1946 and managed the team until 1949.
