COLLEGE FOOTBALL TODAY : CS Northridge (3-1) vs. Cal Lutheran (2-2)

Share

At Cal Lutheran, 2 p.m.

Neither Cal Lutheran or Cal State Northridge come barnstorming into their matchup at Mount Clef Stadium. After winning their first two games, the Kingsmen have lost two straight, including a 33-9 loss at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo last week. And the Matadors, after winning three straight, were blown out at Southern Utah State a week ago, 49-20. Cal Lutheran quarterback Tom Bonds is questionable. He sprained his right knee two weeks ago against Cal State Hayward and has not played since. Freshman quarterback Jeff Chalmers will start for the Kingsmen, according to Shoup. He completed 10 of 24 passes against Cal Poly SLO. Despite giving up 501 yards at Southern Utah--more than double the total of yards they allowed in the first three games--the Matadors lead the Western Football Conference in defense. Northridge quarterback Chris Parker suffered through the worst game of his college career last week, completing just 8 of 29 passes for 86 yards. Running back Mike Kane, who leads the conference in rushing and scoring, is averaging 119.8 yards a game on the ground. He has rushed for more than 100 yards in three of Northridge’s four games. Kane has scored six touchdowns rushing and two receiving. CSUN won last year, 27-23, and leads the series between the schools, 6-3. The Matadors have defeated the Kingsmen three times in a row.

Moorpark (2-2) vs. Bakersfield (1-3)

At Bakersfield College, 7:30 p.m.

Perhaps the only thing that can beat Moorpark at Bakersfield is overconfidence. The Raiders, though it took a while, posted a 10-7 win over Ventura last week on opening day of the Western State Conference season. Bakersfield is coming off a 17-13 loss to Fullerton and is suffering from an unusual slow start. To their credit, each of the Renegades’ losses have been to teams ranked in the top 20 in the state. If the Raiders hadn’t beat Ventura, the trip to Bakersfield could have been painstaking, according to Moorpark Coach Jim Bittner. “How do you think I could motivate these guys to want to travel all the way to Bakersfield and play there after losing to Ventura?” he said. Moorpark still hasn’t settled on a starting quarterback. Dan Nagelmann, Steve Armstrong and Steve Haddad presumably will share the duties tonight. Nagelmann has produced the most, so far. The freshman from Thousand Oaks High has completed 28 of 59 passes for 349 yards and two touchdowns in limited play. Overshadowed by the quarterback uncertainty are linebackers Don Ott and Tony Lucero. Lucero was named one of six state players of the week for his performance against Ventura. Lucero had 15 tackles, four assists and a sack in the Ventura game. Ott sacked Ventura quarterback Russ Widerburg on a late Ventura fourth down to thwart a late Pirate rally.

Harbor (2-1) vs. Valley (0-3)

At Valley College, 7:30 p.m.

There is no quarterback controversy at Valley, which is off to a slow start after being heralded as one of the better teams in the area. Quarterback Josh Davis, who also got off to a slow start, has left the team, apparently because of injury. Tonight’s probable starter, Barry Hanks, threw for 232 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter of Valley’s 44-30 loss against Desert. Valley also has John Watkins as a quarterback. Watkins was impressive in Valley loss to Ventura earlier this season. Harbor, which began its season by beating Moorpark easily, is off to one of its best starts in recent history. Known mostly for its basketball and baseball teams, Harbor’s football team is undefeated in the Southern California Conference. Statistics watch: Hanks is averaging 19.3 yards per pass completion. Valley running back Dondre Bausley has rushed 38 times for 195 yards and two touchdowns. Receivers John Jake and Randy Bohn have combined for 386 yards on 18 receptions for the Monarchs. Defensive back Troy Koopman has two interceptions for 18 yards.
