A 75,000-pound bulldozer snapped through chains holding it to a flatbed trailer, rolled onto the street and smashed into a sports car driven by a 60-year-old Laguna Niguel man Thursday.

Although Thomas Cooper was trapped in the crushed car for more than an hour, he was reported in fair and stable condition after the accident. He suffered a fractured back--but no paralysis--and some chemical burns from spilled gasoline.

California Highway Patrol Officer Ken Daily said he “couldn’t even believe the man was alive” because of the extensive damage to the car, which the bulldozer rolled over and pushed into a wall. Orange County firefighters used power tools and their hands to work Cooper free.
