Share

Rookie goaltender Bill Ranford stopped 35 shots, and the Boston Bruins began a six-game western swing with a 2-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets Tuesday night at Winnipeg.

Rick Middleton had a goal and an assist to give the 19-year-old Ranford a working margin. Ranford lost his shutout when Paul MacLean scored on a 15-foot wrist shot with 8:56 left.

Ranford protected the one-goal margin with outstanding stops on shots by Dale Hawerchuck, Laurie Boschman and Mario Marois in the final minutes.

The two points gave Middleton 801 in his career with the Bruins.

The Jets, who won their first two games this season, dominated play most of the night, outshooting the Bruins, 36-18. But Ranford, who gave up 10 goals in his first two games, was tough in the clutch.

St. Louis 1, Toronto 1--Brian Sutter picked up a loose puck with 72 seconds left in regulation and lifted a backhand shot into the net to give the Blues a tie at Toronto.
