The National Collegiate Athletic Assn. placed the Louisiana State football program on a one-year probation without sanctions.
“The violations found in football were not considered serious in nature,” Frank J. Remington, chairman of the Infractions Committee, said in a news release. “And they did not demonstrate a pattern of abuse by the football coaching staff.”
Included in the probation is a requirement that LSU submit a written report to the NCAA by Feb. 1, 1987, “that identifies measures taken to ensure that football coaching staff members are knowledgeable regarding NCAA legislation.”
There were no sanctions against television appearances or postseason competition.
The NCAA said one current assistant football coach was involved in a recruiting violation and that he will be required to complete the course of instruction regarding NCAA legislation and limit his off-campus recruiting during the 1986-87 academic year. The coach was unnamed.
