El Modena High School held Santa Ana Valley to only four yards in total offense and one first down in a 21-0 victory over the Falcons Friday night at Santa Ana Stadium.

The Falcons never crossed midfield.

While El Modena’s defense managed to stop everything Valley tried, halfback Ross Bauer sparked the Vanguards’ attack with 173 yards in 23 carries in a Century League opener for both.

Valley (1-5) had 28 yards passing, but lost 24 yards rushing. The Vanguards (3-3) finished with 235 yards on the ground and 71 through the air for 306 total yards. El Modena controlled the game by dominating both lines of scrimmage. The only thing that slowed their drives were their own penalties, which cost them 85 yards and stalled more than one drive.

Sophomore quarterback Trey Frank completed 7s of 14 passes for El Modena, including two touchdowns. He hit wide receiver John Thompson with a 16-yard scoring strike early in the second quarter and connected with wide receiver Brady Whittingham on an 11-yard scoring play late in the game.

Bauer scored El Modena’s other touchdown with 10:35 left in the final period when he broke free for a 53 yard run. Bauer also had runs of 15 and 13 yards.

The Falcons only first down came midway through the third quarter when quarterback Steve Calhoun completed a 10-yard pass to tailback Eddie Napper. Calhoun was four of 12 for 28 yards.
